The Importance of Checking Your Electrics Every 10 Years

28 October 2010 355 views No Comment

The electrics in your home are extremely important. If wired incorrectly or if they start to deteriorate, it can cause potentially dangerous problems. As a general rule it is a good idea to ensure that the electrics in your home are thoroughly checked over every 10 years.

You might not realize it, but the electrics in your home do deteriorate as time goes on. This is through general wear and tear. Take a look at the fuse box and there should be a sticker saying when the last inspection took place. If there isn’t one, or if it has been longer than 10 years, then you should make an appointment to get them looked into. If there is a sticker then there will be a recommended date for the next inspection.

What Could Happen

If you choose not to get your electrics checked then a number of serious problems could occur. Firstly there is a danger of electrocuting yourself. Faulty electrical work can potentially even kill you. Not only that, but there is also an increased risk of a fire breaking out.

These are both extremely serious problems that you will obviously want to avoid at all costs. Calling a professional electrician out to look at your homes wiring is not very expensive. The benefits far outweigh the costs.

Preventing Potential Problems

As well as getting regular inspections, you can also look out for visible wear and tear near electrical sockets. For example, if the plate around your plug sockets becomes damaged, it would be a good idea to replace it. You can find hundreds of different switch plates both online and offline. American Home Plus stocks a great selection at low, affordable prices.

Overall if your home hasn’t had an electrical inspection in over 10 years then now would definitely be the time to book one.
