The Advantages and Disadvantages of an Open Plan Living Space

6 October 2010 6,034 views No Comment

Many people choose to have an open space design in their homes these days. By incorporating an open plan design into the room you will benefit from more space and a brighter room too. More light is able to pass through and that will leave you with a much bigger looking home. However, there are disadvantages that you should be aware of too.

The Potential Disadvantages

The first potential disadvantage that you should be aware of is the fact that there will be no privacy in the rooms. The most popular rooms to combine together are the kitchen and the living room. When you knock down the wall, everybody will be able to see what you are doing in the kitchen. This may be a disadvantage if you like to entertain guests and you don’t like them watching you in the kitchen!

Another potential disadvantage is the fact that it will take longer to warm up in the winter. This means that you will use more heating and your bills will be slightly more expensive.

The Advantages

One of the major advantages of an open plan living space is the fact that you can move furniture around easily. You also don’t have to battle with doors anymore. An open space can look really inviting when you first walk into the room too.

When you are entertaining friends, open spaces allow you to fit more people into the room comfortably. You will also be able to see each other better and take part in fun games without worrying about space.

Overall there are advantages and disadvantages to an open plan living space. You need to consider both before you make a decision. It is also worth noting that an open plan design can be very expensive. Therefore it isn’t a decision that you should rush into!
