How to Fix the Most Common Garbage Disposal Problems

2 September 2010 244 views No Comment

Garbage disposals can be really handy and they can also be great for the environment too. When you put old food into the garbage disposal, it is basically keeping it out of landfill sites. There is far too much waste going into landfill sites these days. Therefore if you haven’t got one installed in your home, you should definitely consider it now.

If you do have a garbage disposal then you will know that they can come with many different problems. Like everything in the home, after a while things can start to go wrong. Here you will find out how to fix some of the most common garbage disposal problems.

Problem Number One: The Motor Doesn’t Grind, But it Makes a Humming Sound

If you switch on the garbage disposal and it simply makes a humming sound but it doesn’t grind then you may have a jammed flywheel. It could also be that your motor bearings are frozen. If the flywheel is jammed then that is pretty simple to fix. You should be able to free it by yourself. If on the other hand your motor bearings are frozen, you will need to call out a professional to fix them.

Problem Number Two: The Garbage Disposal Regularly Blows a Fuse

This is typically caused by too many appliances being plugged into the same socket. It would be a good idea to install a 15-amp circuit that is purely used just for the disposal.

Problem Number Three: The Disposal is Leaking

Leaks can be quite common and they can be caused by a number of things. The housing gasket might be broken or you could have a loose drain or sink connection. Start by trying to tighten the flanges that are holding the gaskets. If that doesn’t work then you could always replace them. If you do choose to replace the flanges then you may want to consider the Rohl Extended Flange. It comes in a number of different finishes and it is created to a very high standard. You may also need to replace the drain gaskets too.

These are just three of the main problems that can occur with garbage disposals. American Home Plus has a great selection of garbage disposal hardware available.
