Do you want to completely change your garden but you really don’t know where to start? If you aren’t very good at landscape gardening then there are a few tips that may help. Firstly you need to understand the different terms used in landscape gardening.

There are two main terms that you need to understand. The first is Hardscape and the second is Softscape. The latter refers to plants, trees and anything living that can be placed in the garden. Hardscape on the other hand refers to things such as stone, pathways, patios and decking. You will need a mixture of the two if you want to produce the best results.

Introducing Hardscape and Softscape into the Garden

All good garden landscape ideas contain borders. This could be a border of planters for example. You could place planters around the decking of your home for example. Then you could place nice colored flowers or elegant small trees in them. This combines both hardscape and softscape.

Having a small flower bed with shrubs and flowers will really help to brighten up the garden. Another easy way of using flowers to enhance the garden is to use a trellis bench. This gives you a good seating area and the flowers that you place on it help to make the bench a feature in the garden.

The easiest hardscape idea to use in the garden is patio lighting. Take a look at the Kichler Vintage Park Specialty light for example. This would really help to enhance the look of a patio.

Overall the key to landscaping is to mix hardscape and softscape design. Take a look online and you will find many free landscaping tips that can help you. It would also be worth looking at the range of outdoor lighting on offer from American Home Plus to see if there is anything there that can help.
