Carpet Ideas for High Foot Traffic Areas of the Home

7 July 2010 81,373 views One Comment

When choosing the right carpet for your home, you need to consider how often it will be used. Some rooms are used less than others. Therefore in some rooms you will need to opt for a more durable carpet. If you don’t you could end up needing to replace the carpet in the near future which can prove to be expensive.

Typically the areas of the home that receive the most foot traffic include by the front door, the bathroom and the hallway if you have one. It would be a good idea to place an area rug in behind the front door. That way you will be protecting the area without the need to replace the whole carpet.

Choosing the Right Carpet Style

If you are looking for a good durable carpet, the main thing to keep in mind is its density. The denser the carpet, the more durable it will be. Basically the denseness of a carpet refers to the pile. So a deep pile carpet will be better than a thinner one. It also has the advantage of feeling nicer under the feet too!

Another factor to look at when choosing high traffic carpets is the cushion under the carpet. This will differ enormously from carpet to carpet so it is something that you do need to pay attention to. You will find that if you have a cut pile carpet you will be better off with a firm cushion that has around 7/16 inch thickness. If you have a low pile carpet such as the Berber style carpet, you will need a thin cushion that is around 3/8 inches. It would be a good idea to ask the manufacturer of the carpet to see which type of cushion pad they recommend.

Overall putting carpet in high traffic areas of the home does need a little thought put into it. Once you have the right type of carpets, you can then start placing good quality furniture into the home to improve its overall appearance.
