Be Prepared for Natural Disasters

If you live in an area that is susceptible to harsh weather conditions then it would pay you to be prepared. Natural disasters can happen at any time and if you are unprepared they could cause quite a lot of devastation.

How to Prepare for Disasters

There are a number of things that you should have prepared just in case your home is struck by natural disaster. Firstly you should have a crank emergency radio. These are typically better than battery powered radios and they turn on relatively quickly.

You should also ensure that you have emergency lighting. Do you know where all of the torches are in your home? Do they have enough battery power and are there any spares just in case? It is much safer to use a torch rather than candles, especially if you have children. You should try to make sure that you have battery power for at least a week.

Another thing that could come in really useful is a first aid kit. You can buy these in stores or you can find them online. They come with everything that you could possibly need I an emergency situation.

There should also be a supply of bottled water just in case your home’s supply gets cut off. Similarly there should be some emergency food stored somewhere in case you cannot get out to the shops.

One thing that many people don’t think about is spare apparel. You will need a change of clothes and blankets. Keep them in an emergency bag so that you can quickly just grab it if there is an emergency.

You should make sure that your home is insured. If you do live in a high risk area then many insurers may not provide adequate coverage. You will need to check through your existing policy to see whether damage from natural disaster is covered. If not then find out whether there is an additional policy that you could take out. This will help you to replace any furniture that is damaged if a natural disaster does occur.
